WHAT'S A FOOT: Meetings are held on the 2nd Monday of each month at 7 p.m. Programs and program locations will be posted in local newspapers.
In the meantime everyone should be make aware of the fact that the 2008 calendar is available and can be purchased (in Vermilion) at Brummer's Candy Store on Main Street, from one of the society members, or by sending $5.00 (per calendar) plus a $1.50 shipping / handling fee to the VAAS @ Box 14 in Vermilion. They really are nice collectors items. This calendar is built around Don Englebry's narrative, "Growing Up In Vermilion". Like all the society calendars this one is a real keeper.
Everyone is welcome to attend society meetings, to stop by the new VAAS home on Main Street, and to become a member of the VAAS. While the society has not established regular hours for someone to be in its new offices this should be accomplished shortly.

And I need to mention the projects of my friend Bette Lou Higgins, Artistic Director, of Eden Valley Enterprises. For those unfamiliar with her work - they stage historical people/events from (and) around the State of Ohio.
*Wednesday, May 21, 2008; 6p.m.: Meet Sarah Comstock (portrayed by Bette Lou Higgins) and find out about life on the Underground Railroad in NEXT STOP, FREEDOM! This performance will be part of the annual meeting and banquet for the Lorain County Historical Society. Tickets for dinner and the program are $22 for members and $25.00 for non-members. For further information and to order tickets, call the Historical Society at 440-322-3341.*Friday, June 6, 2008; 7:30p.m.: Commemorate D-Day at the Emmanuel UCC Church in Valley City with a special performance of LETTERS IN THE MARGINS. This moving one-act reader's theatre play tells the story of a young Jewish couple and their work for the British Underground as they tried to escape from Hitler-occupied Europe. The program is FREE and open to the public (Good-will donations are gratefully accepted). The church is located at 6656 Center Rd in Valley City. For more information contact Beth Hebb at 330.483.3655 or check their website at Emmanuel UCC Church
*Monday, June 23, 2008 7p.m: Come and hear about some CLEVELAND FACES AND PLACES when Bette Lou Higgins presents this storytelling program at the Renaissance Center; 26376 John Road in Olmsted Township.; Discover the city's history through it's people and it's landmarks including Moses Cleaveland's first trip to "town" and the Van Sweringen brothers who built the Terminal Tower
A great deal of research and practice goes into these productions to make them as accurate as possible.
I will attempt to keep updates on Eden Valley' programs here throughout the year. So keep coming back.
To arrange for any of their programs for your group, contact Eden Valley directly with your request (and/or to view a complete schedule of Eden Valley Events) visit their web page at Eden Valley.

Please take the time to visit (or re-visit) the Hope Children's Home site linked below. The site has been recently updated. With all the bad things happening on the "dark continent" and elsewhere it's really nice to know that there are some places where the light does shine brightly. Keep in mind that the needs of Hope Children's Home are on-going. Partially due to the horrors taking place in the Mid-East the continued suffering of the peoples in Africa go virtually unnoticed by both our nation and the United Nations - and that should not be. Contributions to that home may be made to a Vermilion expatriot Larry Hohler in New York.
I need to strongly reiterate the fact that this is an on-going project. The need is forever continuing. Please think about these children. If not with your pocketbook - at least in your daily prayers.
Note also that the Hope website has been recently updated. Tis worth a visit. Larry recently wrote to tell me that they just updated their website with photos from our August 5 Fundraiser at the Martha Clara Vineyard.

LINWOOD MEMORIES: From my net-met friend and "Viewer" Janet Waggoner of Westerville, Ohio I have learned that she and another friend, Jack Seith (also of Westerville) are in the process of putting together a book "The Linwood Trees" to celebrate the years since Linwood Park celebrated their 125th birthday - and the book "Through These Gates" was published.
In essence they are looking for your personal stories about your experiences and photographs as a resident or visitor to the park during the last 25 years. A more detailed "PDF" description of what they're looking for can be obtained by contacting Janet
or Jack.
