FINALLY! SOME FINALITY: Well kind and patient "Viewers" - Finally I can see some light at the end of the proverbial "hosting" tunnel. Last Monday I abandoned my attempt to change hosts after experiencing a plethora of problems with both the process and the new hosting tools.
It seemed to be a good idea when I got involved with it. But as the old saying goes; "If it ain't broke - don't fix it."
I ended up staying with my original host - one I've been with for a good 10 years - and upgrading to a more comprehensive and, needless to say expensive, hosting plan.
But this plan should last for awhile. And "Viewers" will be able to access it by simply using my domain name (i.e.www.vermilionohio.org). It does not require the geocities/yahoo names in the address.
There are still a few bugs to work out. I am unable to use the ftp (file transport protocol) to upload large files yet. But that, hopefully, will be ironed out sometime this week.(Note: That problem has as of 7-24-07 been solved)
The important thing (to me at least) is that I can now work on the page without experiencing all the distractions I've been experiencing for the last few weeks.
Be all that as it is this weeks edition will also be rather short. I wasn't certain that I'd be able to do anything with it until this afternoon. But here it is.
I want to mention that I've received some great stuff from "Viewers" during the last few weeks, but have been so distracted that I've not really gotten around to working with much of it.
Alice Risdon Stuckey (as previously mentioned) loaned me 2 disks with several hundred pix from her (the Risdon) family. In addition to the disks she has made substantial notes to help identify the photos.
Alice Wakefield and her sister Mary Ann Wakefield Buxton have forwarded me some interesting notes. Some of this info is extraordinarily interesting.
As I have said, this hosting change - these technical puzzles I've brought upon myself - have been interesting - but intrusive. And while this is fun stuff most folks would (and do) find it bland reading.
Consider the storm to have passed. And thanks for waiting.
THREE MEN AND A FIELD:: This pic is a little over a year old, but I find it to be aesthetically pleasing. I don't know why.
Every 4th of July the folks at Vermilion's Olympic Outing Club have a "kids day".
It begins with the children parading their decorated bikes from one end of the club to the other. The parade ends in front of Cottage #3 (the Diener/Tarrant Cottage) where the American flag is raised while all the children a led in a rousing chorus of "God Bless America". And then some of the adults have various games with prizes in the field. The games last several hours and nobody goes away a loser.
Then it's time for hotdogs,hamburgers and soft drinks outside the clubhouse (a.k.a. Sloppy Joe's).
And when the sun goes down several adults put on a wonderful fireworks show in the field. While I've not attended the fireworks show for several years my spouse, Georgi, tells me that it is fantastic.
And the boys watching the games in the photo above? The fellow on the left is John Fogarty. In the middle is Joe Dorsey. And the fellow on the right is Joe's nephew (I think his name is Jay like his father).
John retired from a Cleveland Printing firm several years back. He and his wife sold their home in West Cleveland and purchased one in Vermilion. John is one of Vermilion's mobile meals delivery drivers.
Joe Dorsey is a retired Cleveland Firefighter. He lives with his wife in Westlake.
The Dorsey boy works for the Cleveland Public Schools. Be that as it is he gets to the Olympic Club every chance he gets.
These are great people. And as one might suspect they're very Irish.
THE STONE HOUSE: This is one of the Alice Stuckey pix of the Risdon Family homestead that once stood on the west side of Risden Road. Until I saw these pix I had all but forgotten the place.
As the pictures indicate it was an old home. I don't know all the details behind it but I'm certain that they will be of much interest.
The Risdon Family has ties to the Vermilion area that go back a long, long way. Somewhere 'mongst the tons of paper I have about me I have the history of the family.
I should (and will) indicate that my family is relatively new to the Vermilion area. Although my mother's mother, Bessie Bottomley Roscoe had early ties to Vermilion, it's not clear to me how strong those early connections might have been.
What I'm getting at is that while I am intensely interested in Vermilion, Ohio my family doesn't go back as far as the Parsons, the Krapps, the Kishmans, nor the Risdons. So I've much to learn.
Hopefully, I'll be able to learn those things and pass them on in a cogent manner. But, damn, life is perhaps too short to do a comprehensive job.
Yet, tis fun, fun, fun!
